MDF is made up of compressed fibres that are shaped and glued together. Due to this when you cut into mdf the fibres tend to separate from one another creating furring. However, this is no reason to avoid MDF as a good quality piece of MDF will only show a small amount of furring and can be easily sanded back down to a smooth surface.
While MDF is a better option for skirting than natural wood as it does not change colour or suffer from moisture damage, it cannot match the nobility and natural appearance that is offered by wood.
