A COA should also list possible contaminants, such as heavy metals or pesticides, in the product. “If a company doesn’t make its COA available, that should raise some red flags,” says Vanessa Niles, M.D., a medical cannabis expert at Heally, a telehealth platform.
If you want to try out CBD, Niles suggests starting with a low dose of 10 milligrams per day and increasing gradually to achieve the desired effect. It’s also a good idea to keep your doctor informed about the type of CBD you use, especially since it can interact with some medications.
The FDA continues to be concerned about products that claim to contain CBD that are marketed for therapeutic or medicinal uses without the appropriate support. Selling these unapproved products violates the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C). The agency has sent warning letters to companies selling such products and may initiate an enforcement action if there is sufficient cause.
