Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Starting Something Since 1979.

Today, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Carolina Youth Development Center is a leader in mentoring services for the Tri-county area, which includes Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties. Since its inception in 1979, Big Brothers Big Sisters of CYDC has facilitated life-changing mentoring relationships for over 8,000 area children.

Charleston's history with Big Brothers Big Sisters began in 1972, when a sailor stationed here contacted the then Horizon House program to assist him in forming a Big Brothers program. Four years later, under the auspices of Trident United Way, the Big Sister component was added and the Trident Big Brothers Big Sisters program began. In 1979, the program gained provisional membership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA); and in 1984, after the merger (of the residential program known as Oak Grove with Horizon House and Big Brothers Big Sisters) to create Carolina Youth Development Center (CYDC), Big Brothers Big Sisters of CYDC earned full member status with BBBSA.
